St. Nicholas mill and houses threatened by development
Communiity Consultation is taking place on a 44 storey condominium tower proposed for the corner of St. Nicholas and St. Mary Sts. on what is now St. Regis College. Members of the public are encouraged to come out, hear the Developer, Councilor Kyle Rae, and other citizens opinions on this tower that will "canyonize" a historic neighbourhood (home to the original "A" Space and other cultural non profits); destroy a Planning Mill built in 1887 and impact negatively on the quality of life for all who consider this stretch of St. Nicholas one of the few remaining "green oases" in midtown.
Editors Notes: Perhaps the time has come to make St. Nicholas Street a Heritage Conservation District.
Opera Atelier also began on this street. Marshall Pynkoski and Jeannette Zingg taught ballet from a St. Nicholas Street studio during the late 70's and early eighties. Jeremy Nasmith, my nephew, now a former National Ballet soloist took his first dance steps here.
