For those familiar with a values-based approach to heritage masonry conservation, this three-day course offers training on the complex issues involved in the conservation and repair of masonry, including the recognition and diagnosis of decay; repair options and treatments; cleaning and surface treatment. A range of masonry materials including brick, stone and terra cotta will be included. The course will include a mixture of lectures, demonstrations, case studies and practical exercises.
Special attention will be made to a detailed study of mortars, including investigation and analytical techniques, choice of appropriate mortars, and repair techniques. Demonstrations will include: the preparation and installation of compatible mortars; the cleaning of natural stone and brick; and, the patching and repair of cracked and friable masonry.
Participants will gain an understanding of materials and methods that comply with the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada. This is a follow - on practical course for those who may have attended the previously given two day introductory course.
Objectives
" Each participant will have a good understanding of the types and characteristics of masonry used in construction.
" Each participant will leave with an excellent understanding of acceptable policy and technical practices related to the repair and maintenance of historic masonry buildings and structures.
" Each participant will receive a good introduction to sources of information for general and specific advice on technical aspects of heritage building conservation with an emphasis on stone and brick masonry.
