Design at Riverside Gallery
School of Architecture, Cambridge
Master Works is a juried exhibition that showcases exceptional thesis projects by recent Masters of Architecture graduates of the University of Waterloo, School of Architecture. The exhibition is selected from proposals submitted to the Design at Riverside Advisory Committee, comprised of representatives from Cambridge Galleries and from the University of Waterloo, School of Architecture.
For the first time, the committee selected two projects for Master Works. Ecstatic City and Jerusalem/Sarajevo--in-between cities will be exhibited separately, but simultaneously at Design at Riverside.
Ecstatic City by Tara Keens-Douglas and Lisa Rajumar-Maharaj
Ecstatic City focuses on the festival of Carnival as it is envisioned and experienced in the Caribbean island, Trinidad. The exhibition considers the relationship of the festival to personal architecture, space and urban form. In a vivid and dynamic display of interpretive works including paintings, costumes, photographs, and film, the exhibition communicates the vibrant form of Carnival through the embodied experiences of two students of the School of Architecture.
Jerusalem/Sarajevo--in-between cities by Lejla Odobaši and Liana Bresler
Dual cities, split by religion and nationalism, caught between a rich, diverse and tormented past and a contested future, both Jerusalem and Sarajevo are cities of multiplicity and division. They are often spoken of, but normally seen only through the eyes of the media, far removed from the human experience. This exhibition is envisioned as a comparative journey highlighting specific points of cultural overlap, where myth and reality meet.
Both of these shows present a feast of images in a variety of media connecting the experience of the gallery visitor to a world of global culture and conflict.
