The Toronto Architectural Conservancy is the first branch of the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario. For the past few years it has focussed its energies on publications and walking tours, and also launching a major, ultimately frustrating, effort to save the Riverdale Hospital.
During the 1970's it had close to 1000 members and was very important in establishing the Toronto Inventory of Heritage Property and implementing the Ontario Heritage Act. Since the last president, Edna Hudson died almost ten years ago, Alec Keefer has soldiered on as acting president but he is looking for the cavalry to come and give him some relief. He has recruited some new board members, more are needed. TAC currently has about 200 members.
The Toronto Architectural Conservancy was founded in the former City of Toronto where its focus has remained for the most part. Since amalgamation there hasn't been a strong advocacy voice for heritage to cover the whole of the megacity. Heritage Toronto does great education work but doesn't get into advocacy on individual properties. As an agency funded by the City of Toronto it would be inappropriate for HT to get involved in decisions made by other city departments such as Heritage Preservation Services or Museum staff. They have played mediation roles in issues such as Riverdale Hospital.
In a few cases the provincial office of ACO and president have taken positions on Toronto heritage matters such as the Downsview Airport, Riverdale hospital and on Queen's Park views, however the local branch needs to be become that voice. To do that TAC needs to grow its membership and influence. TAC probably also has to encourage the founding of new ACO branches in other parts of Toronto and the GTA.
I am planning to offer to serve as President of TAC on the 20th. If you have been a member of TAC in the past but have let your membership lapse, please consider rejoining and getting more involved. You will be able to take out a membership at the AGM. You can also join the Toronto branch of ACO by going to the ACO website and clicking on the membership key where you will be able to download a mail in membership form at

If you haven't been to the Arts and Letters Club lately come early and enjoy a drink at the bar and a tour of the building.
