Private enterprises have long used architecture to capture peoples' attention, attract customers, and project an image. This course examines the great variety of theatre, hotel, bank, industrial, and retail architecture over nearly 200 years in Toronto. We'll see how building designs changed to reflect changing habits, and how lavish ornamentation and classical columns have given way to sleek storefronts and towers. You'll learn more about some of the city's landmarks and discover little-known treasures. Hundreds of photographs will illustrate the lectures, and one class will be a walking tour.
