From Issue No. 197 | May 02, 2012

We invite you to join us for a full day technical program on May 16, 2012 in Toronto. Our program includes a series of presentations and demonstrations designed to explain and illustrate current best practices for masonry repair, repointing and architectural coating. Participants will gain a practical understanding of repair systems and mortars and methods for their proper application. Join presenters Michael Edison, Chemical Engineer and President of Edison Coatings, Inc., and Marc Cote, Masonry Restoration Expert, for an informative, non-commercial technical program.

Topics:

Session 1. Masonry Mortars & Repointing / Mortiers et rejointoiement

Do you know the differences between modern and historic mortars? Between hydrated lime, hydraulic
lime and lime putty? Between masonry cement, portland cement and natural cement? Do you know
where and when each of these is appropriate? Chemical engineer Michael Edison will explain these
materials, how they work and how they are properly combined with other ingredients to make durable, compatible masonry mortars. Demonstrations will illustrate preparation of various types of mortars and how to avoid potential errors in mortar proportioning. Applicable ASTM standards and historic repointing guidelines will be discussed.

Session 2. Terra Cotta & Stone Repair

Chemical Engineer Michael Edison will discuss repair system formulation and performance. Advanced topics include discussion of the importance of proper work sequencing and issues revolving around working on saturated terra cotta buildings.

LIVE DEMO'S: TOOLS, PREPARATION, MIXING, FINISHING

The workshops include live demonstrations, giving participants an opportunity to see and feel the various repair and refinishing systems used in terra cotta and stone repair. Particular emphasis is placed on how to create different textures and profiles, how to blend repairs with adjacent elements, and how to control color variations.

Live demonstrations and Hands-On exercises will enable participants to see and better understand the key principles, materials, techniques and issues relating to use of mortars for various types of repointing projects.

Registration / Inscription:

Group size is limited to assure a meaningful workshop experience. Advance registration is required. Registration fees will cover course notes, cold buffet, and refreshments.
