This workshop is a partnership between the Ontario Urban Forest Council, Trees Ontario, Ottawa Forests and Greenspace Advisory Committee and is sponsored by Tree Canada. Speakers include the professional staff of the Ontario Urban Forest Council,the Ontario Heritage Trust, the City of Ottawa, and Urban Forest Innovations.The Bytown Museum exhibit "Six Moments in the History of the Urban Forest" will be discussed by its curator Joanna E. Two separate events dedicated to identifying, celebrating and protecting heritage trees.
June 8, 2012 provides the tools that professionals and volunteers need to know:
(a) what qualifies as a heritage tree,
(b) how to research, nominate and evaluate the natural and cultural heritage values of landmark trees in a community,
(c) how to undertake cultural heritage research for trees,
(d) an understanding of the options available for tree protection under the Planning Act, the Municipal Act and the Ontario Heritage Act,
(e) how the arboricultural practices used in the stewardship of ancient trees differs from younger trees.
The day ends with a field component in the CEF Arboretum and "Certification" as a heritage tree evaluator is provided to those qualified participants that complete the day.

June 9, 2012 is a guided field trip to Rideau Hall, Parc Richelieu (OHA Part IV s. 20 designated), Champlain Oaks. This is a separate (but related) event.
