Cambridge Galleries presents COMMON GROUND, a summer long project in multiple venues across the city of Cambridge, Ontario.

COMMON GROUND is part exhibition, part public art, part landscape/environment awareness event, and a catalyst for broad community involvement. It showcases the work of leading Canadian landscape architects and visual artists and provides a platform for the discussion of urban design and environmental issues.

Cambridge Galleries Curators Esther E. Shipman (Design at Riverside) and Iga Janik (Queen's Square and Preston Galleries) bring together innovative landscape and urban design practitioners and artists with local citizens, businesses, design and environmental organizations, municipal governments and academic institutions through engaging gallery exhibitions, outdoor installations, and events in multiple venues.

COMMON GROUND is intended to be a thought provoking spectacle. The programs are a series of interventions that will physically alter the city, and introduce new ideas, prompt conversations and hopefully encourage citizens and city officials alike to re-imagine and help determine the future design of the city.

3ByLAND, curated by Esther E. Shipman, highlights contemporary Canadian landscape architecture through an innovative gallery exhibition at Design at Riverside, and three unique public art installations commissioned specifically for Common Ground featuring prominent, award winning firms: PLANT Architect Inc (Toronto), Vlan Paysages (Montreal) and Janet Rosenberg + Associates (Toronto).

MINI GOLF – a social practice, curated by Iga Janik is a fully functioning nine-hole mini golf course designed by nine teams of artists and laid out across downtown Cambridge beginning and ending at Queen's Square Gallery. Reflecting on the use of public spaces, urban development trends and issues of access, artists are developing projects that reflect individual sites and conditions. Collectively, this series of installations will provoke discussions around space usage, land value, and the role of spectacle in social engagement and public art. Participating artists: Steve DeBruyn (London), Vikki Dziuma (Guelph), Barr Gilmore (Toronto), Lee Goreas (Vancouver, Toronto), Marcia Huyer and Robert Hengeveld (Toronto), Derek Liddington (Toronto), Jess Perlitz (Philadelphia, Toronto), Julie René de Cotret (Montreal, Guelph) and Amy Wong (Toronto).

We are collaborating with partners across the region; Cambridge Sculpture Garden, Waterloo Architecture, University of Guelph Landscape Architecture Program and rare Charitable Research Reserve. COMMON GROUND activities are concentrated at Two Hubs—the downtown core of Cambridge and rare Charitable Research Reserve, a 900+ acre protectorate minutes from downtown. Touring sites on foot is made easy with ample parking available at both locations.
