From Issue No. 107 | November 27, 2007

The care and treatment of heritage resources requires specialized knowledge and skills that are applied within the context of clear management goals, values and strategies. This course provides a detailed survey of the philosophical, ethical and practical aspects of physical conservation of heritage resources and strengthens your capacity to recommend appropriate approaches to conservation treatments. Please note that, given the highly technical nature of many conservation treatments, this course focuses on planning for conservation treatments rather than on specific interventions that require the skills of trained conservators.

The Cultural Resource Management Program is an Architectural Institute of British Columbia registered provider offering an AIBC-accredited activity for continuing education learning units. This course is assigned 36 AIBC core learning credits. It is also accepted for learning credits with the Planning Institute of British Columbia.

Instructor: Alastair Kerr
Alastair Kerr is an expert in heritage planning and historic resource evaluation, and is a leading theorist in heritage conservation in Canada. He holds a BA and an MA in art and architectural history from the University of Victoria. For the past thirty-three years Alastair has worked for the British Columbia Heritage Branch where he has had extensive experience in policy development, strategic planning, historic resource evaluation, historic site and heritage planning, heritage law, public consultation and participation programs, downtown revitalization, dispute resolution, and training. Currently Alastair is the Manager of Heritage Programs in the Heritage Branch, Ministry of Tourism, Sport, and the Arts.
