Harbord Village History Program

From Issue No. 220 | November 25, 2013

A special exhibit to be held at the Miles Nadal JCC, designed by students in the Master of Museum Studies program at the Faculty of Information, University of Toronto. The exhibit draws on over 100 recorded interviews and photographs collected from current and former residents of Harbord Village.

This free exhibit is suitable for all ages and uses audio and visuals to display neighbourhood stories and memories from the 1930s through the 1970s. You are welcome to drop into the gallery (just inside the Spadina entrance of the JCC) between 9 am and 9 pm (9 am to 7 pm on weekends) to enjoy the show. If you are interested in bringing a class or large group, please phone 416 924 6211 x 250, to get more information and to arrange a mutually convenient time with the JCC staff.

The exhibit is the first of three parts of the Harbord Village History Program, which celebrates the rich history of our community. “StoryPost” plaques on 25 or so themes from the interviews will soon be placed in key locations in the neighbourhood. You will be able to scan them with your smartphone to hear brief selections of memories about everyday life in days gone past.

The heart of our history program will be a new website which will give public access to all the interviews, photographs, and StoryPost recordings, along with a comprehensive index for easy searching and an invitation to contribute further stories and photos. Check out http://www.harbordvillagehistory.ca/  to see the wealth of resources collected.
