James W. Strutt was one of Canada's most prolific architects of the Modern Era and a contemporary of both Frank Lloyd Wright and Buckminster Fuller. The former's influence is evident in many of his residences, particularly the site sensitivity, materiality and interior detailing. However the latter had a far greater impact on the building form and structure. The Strutt House, completed very early in his career and a jewel in the Capital, reveals a synthesis of these influences taken and made truly his own. This lecture will provide an introduction to this fascinating architect, the house and the ongoing negotiations, planning, development and 'coming of age' of a very significant, modern heritage conservation effort.
Titania Truesdale is one of the founders and current Managing Director of The Fondation Strutt Foundation, a federally incorporated not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving the modernist architectural heritage of central Canada.
