From Issue No. 231 | July 18, 2014

A little over a century ago, the Ottawa Improvement Commission built a landscaped scenic driveway along the west side of the Rideau Canal including a segment that cut across the Glebe to Dows Lake starting with Monkland Avenue and curving slightly at OConnor Street to join Clemow Avenue all the way to Bronson. At the same time, the OIC created the beautifully landscaped Central Park East and West and the walled Patterson Creek inlet and lagoon from the natural Patterson Creek waterway that extended from the canal to beyond Bank Street. Excavation of the Patterson Creek inlet provided much of the material to fill in and create the bordering parkland and Linden Terrace itself. Real estate development along the newly-created streets of Monkland Avenue and Linden Terrace followed rapidly creating one of Ottawas most scenic and desirable residential areas, significant in terms of residential and landscape architecture and rich in social history.
GUIDES: Bill Price, Secretary/Board member of Heritage Ottawa and Glebe resident; Lynn Armstrong, landscape architecture historian, heritage activist and Glebe resident.
